秩父市について/About Chichibu City
Because of yesterday's article in Norra Vasterbotten, it seems that some people in Skelleftea get interested in this blog. Therefore I'd like to introduce our city, Chichibu, to everybody in Skellefteå.
Chichibu City is located in the western part of Saitama and is located about 60-80km from the heart of Tokyo. Most of the Chichibu region has been designated as a National or Prefectural Park. It is blessed with natural environment. The Arakawa River flows through the center of Chichibu's area, and there are four dams. Because this area holds about 15% of all of Saitama, at 577.69 square km, there are many mountainous districts. About 87% of Chichibu's area is covered by forestland.
On April 1, 2005 Chichibu City, Otaki Village, Arakawa Village and Yoshida Town merged together forming the new Chichibu City. In the past lumber, silk and cement industries flourished. Now, Chichibu is famous for its fabrics. Recently, the electronics industry has been growing as a major local industry. And we also trying to regenerate the industry related to wood by utilizing our forest resources such as bio-energy projects. With its abundant resources for tourism because of events such as Chichibu Night Festival and Pilgrimage of 34 temples, Chichibu attracts many people from different parts all over Japan.
